Instructor Profile - Alisdair Mair

I have been an angler now for over 55 yrs starting by dropping  a baited hand and paternoster rig over the pier at Girvan at about 6yrs of age, while on two weeks holiday ,while my dad idled the time away taking 10 minute time exposures of the sunsets over Ailsa Craig on his slide camera. I soon learned by watching my peers of the time to sling a hand line well over 65 yds  much like a circular beach cast of today without the rod. having the line neatly coiled beside me .
From there I graduated to a screw in ex WD tank aerial as a rod, and a small brass fly reel which I still have to this day, sadly not the rod though. I fished the river Girvan with it when ever my dad would take the time away from his photography to watch over me , however he was no fisher . Cane rod followed on from that then solid and hollow glass rods in both trout and salmon sizes  Milbro now Daiwa .As I grew older and could afford them by working a milk run before school, while at home I cycled many happy miles every week to the Allander in Milngavie from our house in townhead in Glasgow I also course fished in the Forth and Clyde canal and Hoganfield Loch I always went on on my own as nobody else in my group of friends was interested
Yes Boron and carbon fibre came along  by now you will probably guessed I still have all of these rods to this day all in good condition ,reels of all makes to suit ,old Hardys any many others  in my collection.
I have over the yrs fished many of the great beats of the  rivers Tay Spey and Tweed have gone fishing for big game fishing In Portugal the Canaries  Florida and  Belise and Canada but nothing compares to the serenity and scenery of fishing in Scotland for me call me old fashioned if you like.
Nowadays I spend most of my free time when not working in my small one man garage business, teaching the skills I have honed over many years, to children so they can be be proficient anglers, enjoy the sport and our country side ,be courteous ,show etiquet to others ,and to be an ambassador for our sport long after I have passed on I hope !!
In the closed season I run an evening class every wed evening at the lodge at Menteith for children who wish to learn the arts of fly tying, casting ,water craft ,etc.I also enjoy shooting and working my dogs to keep me fit and active during the winter .
